In chapter 245, Schierke follows a strange black spirit through Vritannis and discovers where it came from: a gallows holding the bodies of many Kushan slaves. By touching one of the ropes, she briefly sees the man’s memories and learns that he was taken from his home and sold into slavery. Shocked by what she discovers, Schierke orders the bodies to be cut down and cremated, finally freeing their trapped spirits. Later, she reaches the harbor and is amazed by the enormous ships. For a moment, she realizes that the ordinary human world feels just as strange to her as the Astral World does to everyone else.
