In chapter 139, Nina takes Joachim deeper into the caves beneath the Holy Ground, where he discovers a secret pagan gathering. The people there are under the influence of strange fumes coming from a large fire and begin worshipping a mysterious goat-headed figure as a divine being. Luca secretly watches the ceremony from above and notices that the smoke seems to create visions of a supernatural goddess. Joachim gradually realizes that something is seriously wrong with the ritual, especially when Nina leads him toward the final initiation. When he discovers disturbing human remains in the ritual mixture, the illusion breaks and he tries to escape. Nina immediately accuses him of betrayal, and the members of the gathering chase him until he falls from a cliff.
