In chapter 171, the refugees flee into Albion while the spirits surround the city from outside. Luca saves Nina from being trampled and hides her inside a barrel, then faces the approaching spirits herself. On the wall, Guts, Casca, Isidro, Farnese, Serpico and the others realize that fire keeps the spirits away, so they use burning wood to protect themselves. Guts explains that dawn is approaching and the spirits should retreat with the sunlight.
