Chapter 255 takes place during a major banquet in Vritannis. Magnifico explains to Roderick how the Vandimion family is positioning itself politically while Midland’s nobles argue over the future of the kingdom. Roderick, however, is more interested in exploring the world than politics. Farnese then arrives at the ball, where Magnifico plans to publicly announce her engagement to Roderick. Roderick instead asks her to dance, showing that his feelings are more genuine than Magnifico’s political schemes. Lady Vandimion also realizes that Serpico’s loyalty to Farnese goes far beyond that of an ordinary servant.
