Berserk Manga Chapter 143
In chapter 143, the story focuses mainly on Farnese and Serpico and reveals more about their troubled pasts. Farnese remembers her childhood, when she first witnessed a heretic being burned in the town square. Although she was frightened at first, she eventually became fascinated by the flames and even participated in the execution. This experience strongly influenced her later devotion to the Holy See and her role as a commander. In the present, Farnese orders another group of accused heretics to be burned, but Serpico secretly protects an innocent child whose father is among those condemned. Later, Serpico tells Jerome that his own mother was also burned at the stake when he was young, explaining why he cannot bear to watch the executions. That night, Farnese sits alone by the fire, remembering her past and questioning whether anything she has done was truly right.
